Nelson, Lopez Named NCAA Division I All-America Scholars

NORMAN, Okla. – UConn golfers Jared Nelson and Trevor Lopez have been recognized as NCAA Division I All-America Scholars, as announced Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
To be eligible for GCAA All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be as sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA.
In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, under 79.0 in NCAA Division III, under 78.0 in NAIA, and under 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college
or university. There are 546 NCAA Division I athletes from 193 schools earning 2022-23 GCAA All-America
Scholar honors.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), a grad student at UConn last season, was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring and setting a UConn single-season record at 70.88 strokes per round. He was also named to the 2023 Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team. His 63 in the first round of the Gimmler Invitational was the lowest round of any player in the conference this season and equaled a UConn record.
Nelson won individual medalist honors in two tournaments this season – the Gimmler Invitational and the Golfweek/AGT Invitational – and led UConn in scoring in eight of 11 events. He had six Top 10 and eight Top 20 finishes this season and shot 22 rounds of par-or-better, equaling another UConn single-season record, and had 13 sub-70 rounds. He was named BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Week three times.
Lopez (Winchester, Mass.), a rising junior at UConn, averaged 75.1 strokes per round, with a low round of 69 in 2022-23. He had one Top 10 and two Top 20 finishes and shot four rounds of par or better.
Both Nelson and Lopez were named to the 2022-23 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
