RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Behind a complete game shutout by LHP Garrett Coe, the UConn baseball team (6-10) evened up its series against Cal Baptist, 8-0, on Saturday evening at Totman Stadium.
Coe did not allow a Lancer to reach third base during his dominant performance, a night that saw the Lakeside, Conn. native allow just five hits, three walks and strike out four.
The lefty had never surpassed 5.2 innings in his career prior to Saturday but Coe continued to post zero after zero and was the first UConn pitcher to go the distance since Pat Gallagher fired a complete game shutout against St. John's in April of 2022.
Korey Morton delivered plenty of offense for Coe, the senior outfielder laid down a safety squeeze in the first to plate Paul Tammaro and give UConn the early advantage, 1-0.
The Norwalk, Conn. native followed it up with a solo homer in the third and a two-run shot in the fourth to make it 5-0 Huskies. It is the second multi-homer career of Morton's career.
Matt Malcom and Jake Studley each added their team leading fifth round trippers of the year to give UConn four on the night, a new season-high.
The victory sets up a rubber game on Sunday beginning at 5:05 p.m. ET.
