PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The UConn baseball team (9-13) captured a 5-1 victory against Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field.
UConn starting pitcher Stephen Quigley was dominant for the Huskies with a complete game performance that featured just five hits, one run and four strikeouts to a Rutgers offense that entered the day hitting .339.
The UConn offense got on the board early with Bryan Padilla leading off the game with a double, advancing the third on a Caleb Shpur sacrifice bunt and scored on a Korey Morton two-out RBI single.
Rutgers looked to tie the game in the fifth after Ty Doucette doubled to center to lead off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt advanced him to third, Quigley got a roller back to the mound to get a key out number two.
The Halifax, Mass. native then got Cam Love to hit a soft chopper to short that Paul Tammaro was able to field and quickly get to first base to end the threat.
UConn added three runs in the eighth inning after Padilla hit his second home run of the weekend, a solo shot, to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
After the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs, Dalena hit a dribbler out in front of home plate that Joe Mazza tossed towards the plate but catcher Jackson Natali didn't have his foot on the plate and allowed Caleb Shpur to score.
Luke Broadhurst followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-0 Huskies.
In the ninth, Paul Tammaro provided a little insurance with an RBI double down the left field line.
Next up, the Huskies head home for a season-long 13-game home stand that begins against Boston College on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:05 p.m.
