STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's basketball program will retire the No. 10 in honor of program legend Sue Bird this Sunday before the Huskies face DePaul at 1 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion.
The number retirement ceremony will take place approximately 30 minutes before tipoff. The ceremony will stream on the UConn women's basketball X and Facebook pages and the UConn Huskies YouTube page.
Bird was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this September, making her eligible to have her number retired.
A member of the UConn women's basketball team from 1998-02, Bird helped lead the Huskies to the 2000 and 2002 NCAA Championships. The Huskies won eight BIG EAST championships in her four years in Storrs.
Bird earned the Nancy Lieberman Award three times in college as the nation's top point guard. She was the 2002 Naismith Player of the Year, Wade Trophy winner, AP National Player of the Year and USBWA National Player of the Year.
Bird finished her UConn career with 1,378 points and 585 assists. She still holds the UConn career records for 3-point field goal percentage (45.9) and free throw percentage (89.2). Bird compiled a 136-9 record in her four seasons at UConn, a 93.7 win percentage.
Bird was UConn's first-ever No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft. She was drafted by the Seattle Storm, where she spent her entire professional career from 2002-22. Bird was a WNBA-record 13-time All-Star, a five-time All-WNBA First Team selection and a three-time All-WNBA Second Team selection.
Bird led the Storm to four WNBA Championships (2004, '10, '18, 20). She is the WNBA's all-time assist leader (3,234). The Storm retired No. 10 in her honor in 2023.
Bird had an illustrious USA Basketball career, winning five Olympic gold medals and four World Championship gold medals. She was named the 2021 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year.
Bird's No. 10 will join Rebecca Lobo's No. 50 and Swin Cash's No. 32 as the only retired numbers in program history.
