Strong, Quiñonez Earn BIG EAST Awards

NEW YORK – After leading the top-ranked UConn women's basketball to a 2-0 week, sophomore forward Sarah Strong was named the BIG EAST Player of the week while forward Blanca Quiñonez was tabbed the conference's Freshman of the Week Monday.
Strong averaged 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game with a 63.3 field goal percentage and 46.2 three-point percentage.
In an 89-53 win over Marquette, Strong scored 22 points, shooting 9-12 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range. She added seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. In a 90-64 win over No. 11 Iowa, Strong scored 20 of her 23 points in the first half. She notched seven rebounds, four assists and tied her career high with six steals.
Strong leads the Huskies in rebounds, assists, blocks and steals this season.
Quiñonez averaged 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds last week while shooting 60% from the field and 50% from three.
Against Marquette, Quiñonez scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds. Against Iowa, she notched 10 points, four rebounds, a personal-best five assists and tied her season high with four steals.
This is Strong's sixth career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor and Quiñonez's fourth Freshman of the Week honor.
This is the fourth time this season UConn has swept the conference's weekly honors.
UConn (12-0, 3-0 BIG EAST) travels to Butler (7-6, 1-2) next Sunday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. on TNT/truTV.
