House Settlement Approved: A New Era for College Athletics

Dear UConn Nation,
InĀ JuneĀ 2020, a lawsuit was filed by a former college swimmer named Grant House, seeking damages for student-athletes who were unable to earn money from their name, image and likeness (NIL). This lawsuit and other similar cases were ultimately consolidatedĀ into what has been popularly referred to as the House vs. NCAA settlement.Ā Now,Ā five years later,Ā U.S. District Judge Claudia WilkenĀ has justĀ granted final approval of the historic settlement, which will reshape collegeĀ athletics through the introduction of revenue sharing with student-athletes starting on July 1.Ā
As you know from my priorĀ communications, all of us at UConn have been closely monitoring the legal proceedings and making plans for this eventuality.Ā Revenue sharing represents aĀ necessary and significant financial investmentĀ and,Ā as such, we have been meeting regularly toĀ exploreĀ new and enhanced revenueĀ streamsĀ in order toĀ identify funding sources.Ā FromĀ bolstering ticket sales toĀ securingĀ additional corporate sponsorshipsĀ toĀ elevating media rights,Ā we have been analyzingĀ every opportunity to enhance departmentalĀ income, while minimizingĀ or postponing expendituresĀ that don't carry an associated return.Ā We areĀ alsoĀ studying possibleĀ naming rightsĀ initiatives,Ā more robustĀ concession areas at our facilities,Ā andĀ merchandising/apparelĀ salesĀ expansionĀ in the market.Ā Maximizing revenues in theĀ new world orderĀ will beĀ a paramount priority.Ā
The other critical element in ourĀ revenue generation efforts, which I have shared with our loyal supporters through myĀ emails, in person at games and throughĀ regularĀ conversations, is private fundraising.Ā The House settlement permits athletic departments toĀ shareĀ up to $20.5 million annually with their student-athletes.Ā This year, we intend to share $18 million, with theĀ near-termĀ goal ofĀ being fully funded.Ā It is only with the support of our loyal fansĀ that we will be able toĀ thriveĀ in thisĀ evolving landscape, asĀ success in revenue sharing directly translates to successĀ onĀ the fields of competition.Ā
As IĀ haveĀ conveyedĀ previously, we need to double our overallĀ donor participation in terms ofĀ Husky Athletic Fund members and contributions,Ā in order toĀ continueĀ competingĀ at the highest level.Ā If we cherish theĀ joyĀ that is derived fromĀ conference, regional and national championships, along with bowl wins, weĀ need to lock arms and travelĀ this road together. TheĀ college athletics gameĀ has changed, but ourĀ focusĀ on greatnessĀ doesn't have to.
For those who already giveĀ soĀ generously, we appreciate you more than you know.Ā Please join us in recruiting more fansĀ whoĀ understand the urgency andĀ willĀ makeĀ a gift to theĀ FightĀ OnĀ Fund.Ā With your help, we willĀ grow our base of support,Ā produceĀ moreĀ winners,Ā and share theĀ ongoingĀ pride in our achievements.Ā
Thank youĀ for your dedication to UConn Athletics and our student-athletes. Go Huskies!
Sincerely,
David Benedict
