TUCSON, Ariz. - The UConn baseball team (2-5) rallied to take a 3-2 in the top of the eighth but ultimately fell 5-4 to Arizona (1-6) on Saturday night in front of 2913 at Hi Corbett Field.
The Wildcats initially took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with the help of two walks and one hit by pitch to plate a pair of runs without a hit.
UConn starter Cayden Suchy settled down as he moved into his outing and kept the Huskies within striking distance. The lefthander allowed a pair of hits and struck out five in 6.2 innings of work. It is his second-straight quality start to begin the season.Â
Trailing by two in the fifth, Chase Taylor and Chris Polemeni registered back-to-back singles. After a Rob Rispoli sacrifice bunt, Evan Menzel delivered a two-run double into the left field corner to make it a 2-2 game.Â
The game remained tied until the eighth when Polemeni notched his third hit of the night, an RBI double off the centerfield fence, to give UConn its first lead of the night.
Arizona responded with three runs on the strength of four hits in the bottom of the frame.Â
Jackson Marshall hit a solo shot, his second of the season, to bring the Huskies within a run in the ninth, 5-4. After a walk to Maddix Dalena and single for Thomas the Huskies had the tying run in scoring position. But a strikeout to Bryce Detwiler ended the comeback attempt.Â
The Huskies will look to win the series on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. MT.
