Shelton Bynum begins his fourth season on the UConn Sports Performance staff in 2025. Bynum came to UConn in January 2022 and was elevated to Associate Director of Football Strength and Conditioning Coach ahead of the 2024 season.
Bynum brings more than 15 years of experience in the weight room, and as an assistant football coach. Previously he served as the Head Sports Performance Coach for Stephens College in Columbia, MO overseeing the development and implementation of in-season and off-season training for the women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and softball programs beginning in the year 2020.
Before Stephens College, Bynum held the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC starting in 2018. At Livingstone, Bynum oversaw all facets of Livingstone’s strength and conditioning program for 13 NCAA sports, including football, men’s & women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s & women’s track & field, and bowling. Before his time at Livingstone, Bynum spent time at Johnson C. Smith University as an Assistant Football Coach and Head Strength & Conditioning Coordinator for four years starting in 2014. He began his collegiate coaching career at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania as an Assistant Football Coach in 2008.
As a former student-athlete, Bynum was a four-year letter winner and starter on the defensive line at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After completing his career at UNC, Bynum participated in the Magnolia Gridiron All-Star Classic held in Jackson, MS in 2006. Later that summer, Bynum received the opportunity to become a Member of the inaugural USA National Football team that won Gold in Japan during the 2007 World Cup of American Football. Bynum participated in summer training camps with the Atlanta Falcons, and also free-agent camps with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants.
Bynum earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina in 2007 and received his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 2015. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
