UConn Women Outdistance Field At Brown Invitational
12/2/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track and Field
As a team, UConn combined for 11 first place performances, which included marks that provisionally qualified for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championship by Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Jr., Providence, RI) in the weight throw and two-time All-American Tamika Toppin (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ) in the high jump. Nurul-Islam turned in a distance of 58'1, while Toppin had a height of 5'10.
UConn's top returning sprinter from a season ago, Sharmaine Abrams (Jr., Manchester, CT) returned to form as she took first in both the 55m and the 200m. Her 55m time of 7.27 erased her previous career best in the event (7.30), while she clocked a 25.75 in the 200m.
I was incredibly pleased with our performance and overall this was a great meet for us in a lot of respects, said Adams. The freshmen learned a lot about themselves and I think some of the upper classmen were surprised by what they were able to do. The provisional qualifying marks should be good springboards on which to build from and I believe that Abrams has established herself as one of the premier sprinters in the New England area.
Following is a list of Connecticut's other first place performers: Triple Jump-Rhashida Abdul-Amalik (37'4), Long Jump- Kafi Davis (18'7), 400m-Ebony Murphy (1:00.23), 800m- Louise Agoston (2:23.78), Mile Run-Nichole Tremblay (5:17.8), 3000M-Kimberly Grabarz (10:38.53), 5000M-Kelly Joy (18:53.47).
UConn returns to the track Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13, as the Huskies travel to New York, NY, for the First Annual Collegiate Invitational at the 168th Street Armory.
