UConn Women Back On Track At Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After breaking for a little more than a month, the University of Connecticut women's track and field team continued the 2000- 2001 indoor season as it competed at the Yale Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 13). No team scores were kept, however, 22 Husky athletes placed with inside the top five in their respective events.
The most dominating performances of the meet were turned in by the UConn high jump and shot put groups. Tamika Toppin (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ) led all competitors in the high jump with a height of 5' 9 3/4 to take first place honors as Connecticut had a one-two-three finish in the event. Deirdre Mullin (Fr., Princeton, NJ) took second with a mark of 5' 5 3/4, while Jennifer Barcellona (Fr., Forked River, NJ) had a third place effort with a height of 5'3 3/4. Kristin Composto (Fr., Iselin, NJ) made it four Huskies in the top five by clearing a bar set at 5'1 3/4 for fifth.
In the shot put the story was Lissa Bloom (Sr., Peabody, MA) who used a distance of 44' 6 to take first place honors. Following Bloom was Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Jr., Providence, RI) who took second with a throw of 41' 6 1/2, while Amy Parkosewich (So., Bethlehem, CT) had a distance of 40' 9 1/2 for third.
Nurul-Islam would go on to finish first in the weight throw with a hurl of 58'4. Also winning her event was Tali Griner (So., Kirait Mzkin, Israel) in the pole vault, with a height of 10' 0. Griner, a transfer from perennial powerhouse Arkansas, still holds the Razorback record in the event, 11' 9.
UConn will be back in action on January 20, as the Huskies travel to Hanover, NH, for the New England Challenge Cup Finals. A season ago, Connecticut finished in second place at the finals behind Brown.
