Huskies End Season With Loss to Temple

PHILADELPHIA (November 24, 2001 )- Temple quarterback Mac Devito threw for 202 yards and four touchdowns, two to wide receiver Sean Dillard, as the Owls defeated the University of Connecticut football team, 56-7, Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. With the loss, the Huskies ended their season with a record of 2-9, while Temple’s record improved to 4-7.
The scoring for Temple began on the opening kickoff when Makonne Fenton returned the ball 94 yards to give the Owls an early 7-0 lead. Temple would score three more times in the first quarter as running back Tanardo Sharps, who finished the day with 202 yards, broke off a 58-yard run with 10:38 remaining. Later in the quarter, Devito hooked up with Harold Jackson on a four-yard pass and found Gerald Butler from 14 yards out to bring it to 28-0.
Temple would find the end zone one more time before the half when running back Lester Trammer went in from one yard out with 2:09 remaining before intermission.
After the break, Temple rattled off 21 more points in the third as Dillard, who caught nine passes for 148 yards, hauled in touchdown strikes from 46 and 10 yards out, while Trammer crossed the plane for the second time on the day on a four-yard run.
UConn was able to get on the board in the fourth quarter as Evan Benson (So., Marietta, GA) closed out the scoring with a two-yard run with 3:37 remaining in the contest. The touchdown was the third of Benson’s career.
Dan Orlovksy (Fr., Shelton, CT) took the snaps for Connecticut, completing 11 passes on 26 attempts for 72 yards and one interception.
Defensively, the Huskies were led by Razul Wallace (Jr., Hicksville, NY) who had seven tackles, two for losses. Maurice Lloyd (Fr., Daytona Beach, FL), Jamal Lundy (Jr., Burlington, NJ) and Roy Hopkins (Jr., Rochester, NY) also contributed to the effort, coming up with six stops each.
