CHARLESTON, S.C. - A two-for-three effort with two runs scored from senior first baseman Philip Hartig would be exactly what The Citadel would need as the Bulldogs doubled Connecticuts scoring in a 6-3 victory over UConn on Sunday afternoon in Charleston, SC. After winning the first of two games yesterday, UConn went on to fall in the second and with todays loss the Huskies record dropped to 1-5 on the season. By virtue of taking two of three in the series, The Citadels record jumped to 8-5.
UConn got out to an early 1-0 lead in the second when a Mike Leonard (Fr., Vernon, CT) single to left brought in Brian Tisbert (Sr., Andover, MA). The Huskies would hold The Citadel scoreless for three innings before giving up the lead allowing two in the fourth. Bulldog designated hitter, Stuart Jordan, evened things on a double that plated Hartig as he would advance to third on a wild pitch and later score on a sacrifice fly by Jason Randall. A Leonard single to left again would add to the Husky run total this time brining home Daniel Trubia (So., Tolland, CT) to tie the game for the second time. With the issue in doubt, The Citadel plated three runs in the sixth and one more in the eighth to put things away. In the sixth it was David Griffin who singled home Hartig and Dallas McPherson, before he scored on an RBI single by Matt Dean. A Leonard passed ball in the eighth accounted for the Bulldogs final tally as Jordan would cross the plate. Cy Hess (Jr., Oakdale, CT) would try to put a UConn rally together in the top of the ninth on a solo home run to right center, but the Huskies fell short as Jon Gorrie (Jr., Northboro, MA) struck out swinging to end the contest.
Jeff Fulchino (So., Hollis, NH) went 5 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs in picking up his second loss on the season, while T.A. Fulmer pitched six frames in picking up his first win on the season and Randy Corn earned his third save on the year in a 1 2/3 effort giving up only one run and one hit.
Next up UConn travels to Athens, GA, to face the 15th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a three-game set March 2-4. Fridays contest will begin at 4 p.m., Saturdays will start at 2 p.m., and on Sunday things will get underway at 1 p.m. Connecticut and Georgia have had one previous meeting a 7-2 Bulldog victory. This came in the 1990 NCAA Northeast Regional as Georgia would go on to win the 1990 NCAA National Championship.
