Butler and Mouring Earn Big East Accolades

PROVIDENCE -- UConn freshman forward Caron Butler was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team and was also a unanimous pick to the All-Rookie Team in a vote of the league coaches announced Monday. Senior guard Albert Mouring earned All-BIG EAST honorable mention status.
Butler led the Huskies in scoring in BIG EAST games this season at 15.8 points per league contest and is second on the team in scoring overall at 15.4. He leads the Huskies in rebounding at 7.7 per game and his 57 steals also lead the team.
Mouring leads UConn in overall scoring at 15.7 points per game and also leads the club in three-point shooting and free throw shooting. Troy Bell of Boston College, Troy Murphy of Notre Dame and Michael Bradley of Villanova were unanimous selections for the 2000-01 All-BIG EAST First Team. The other members of the squad are Preston Shumpert of Syracuse and Calvin Bowman of West Virginia.
The All-BIG EAST First, Second and Third Teams, Honorable Mention, and the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, are selected by the league's head coaches, who may not vote for their own players. Bell, a 6-1 sophomore guard, was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year last season, though Boston College finished with the worst record in the league, 3-13. This season, the native of Minneapolis, Minn. led the Eagles to the best mark in the BIG EAST, 13-3, which includes an East Division title. He finished the regular season third in the conference in overall scoring with a 20.1 average. Bell was third in steals (2.6) and fourth in free throw shooting (.854).
A 6-11 junior center, Murphy was the 1999-00 BIG EAST Player of the Year. This season, he led the league in overall scoring with a 22.6 average and was fourth in rebounding with a 9.3 mark while helping the Fighting Irish to a West Division crown. In league games, he captured his second straight BIG EAST scoring crown with a 22.8 average. The native of Morristown, N.J. was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in '98-99.
Bradley was not even playing in the BIG EAST last season. He was sitting out the year after transferring from Kentucky. A 6-10 junior from Worcester, Mass., he finished second in the BIG EAST in overall scoring (21.8) and third in rebounding (10.0). Bradley leads the nation with a .695 field goal percentage.
After averaging 10.3 points as a reserve last season, Shumpert emerged as one of the BIG EAST's top shooters this year. He is fourth in the league in scoring with an 19.7 average.
Bowman is sixth in scoring and second in rebounding in the BIG EAST. The 6-9 senior from Brooklyn holds averages of 17.8 points and 10.0 rebounds.
