In the opener, Soteropoulos helped his own cause in a hurry when he belted a two-run home run in a four-run first inning UConn outburst. The other two runs were plated on a Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT) RBI triple.
Connecticut padded its lead to 10-0 with six more runs in the fourth inning as the Huskies started the inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) and Mike Scott (Darien, CT). UConn added four more runs on an error, a walk, a single by Joe Kagerer (Lebanon, CT), an RBI single by Brian Tisbert (Andover, MA), a fielder’s choice, a throwing error, an RBI walk to Russ D’Argento (Ashland, MA), and an RBI sacrifice fly by Leonard.
Soteropoulos, improving to 2-0 on the season, pitched five scoreless innings before allowing three runs in the sixth inning and the Eagles added three more in the seventh off Husky reliver Mike James.
In the second game, UConn led 5-2 before BC used a six-run fourth inning to move on top 8-5. The Huskies came back to tie the score at 8-8 but the host Eagles plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the victory. BC took advantage of three UConn errors in the nightcap to score eight unearned runs.
UConn got two runs in the first on a walk, a Tisbert double, a passed ball, and a RBI fielder’s choice by Kagerer. The Huskies added two more in the second on a solo home run by Mike Mocerino (Northboro, MA), a double by Tyler Stefkovich (Westport, CT), and a Tisbert RBI single.
Connecticut got one in the fourth on two walks, a Scott single, and an RBI ground out by Jon Gorrie (Northboro, MA). The Huskies plated two in the fifth on a Kagerer single, an error, a walk, and a two-run double by Scott. The final UConn run came home in the sixth on doubles by Kagerer and D’Argento. Kagerer was five-for-nine in the doubleheader for UConn while Scott was four-for-nine in the two games.
The split set UConn’s overall record at 17-16 and the Huskies are 11-6 in BIG EAST play. Boston College stands at 17-16 and 3-9 in the BIG EAST.
UConn returns to action on Monday, April, 16, hosting Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs.
