Baseball Uses Seven-Run Seventh to Beat Stony Brook

The scoring began in the UConn portion of the seventh frame when Ryan Treat (Sr., Uncasville, CT), Mike Leonard (Fr., Vernon, CT) and Dan Trubia (So., Tolland, CT) had three consecutive singles, which accounted for a pair of the runs and the Huskies having the bases loaded for Cy Hess (Jr., Oakdale, CT). Stony Brook first baseman, Mike Russo's miscue allowed Hess to reach and also brought across Leonard and Treat. Following that, Trubia scored on a passed ball and Brian Tisbert (Sr., Andover, MA) came up with his ninth double of the season to bring around Hess and Peter Soteropoulos (So., Peabody, MA) to cap the inning.
Stony Brook and UConn exchanged runs in the first when George Kearnes grounded out to short to allow James McCurdy to cross for the Seawolves and a bases loaded walk gave the Huskies their first run in Mike Scott (Jr., Darien, CT).
Connecticut added three more over the next four innings thanks in part to a two RBI triple from Tisbert in the third and Joe Kagerer (Sr., Lebanon, CT) getting one through the left side of the infield in the fifth to score Tisbert. On the day, four Huskies had two-hit games (Tisbert, Soteropoulos, Leonard and Russ D'Argento).
McCurdy, Lee Lipschutz and Garrett Renner all singled to drive in a trio of runs for Stony Brook in its side of the seventh, before UConn responded. With the issue no longer in doubt, Renner tagged UConn for one more in the ninth on his fourth hit of the day, as he finished 4-for-5.
Patrick Sperone (Jr., Sicklerville, NJ) relieved Erik Drown in the seventh to move to 6-2 on the season as he went two and one third innings giving up four hits, one earned run, while striking out and walking one. Paul LaMarr was credited with the loss after he came on for one third of the seventh inning and allowed three hits and five runs (one earned).
UConn will be back in action on Tuesday, April 17, as it travels to Amherst, MA, for a game against UMass scheduled for 3 p.m. Following that contest, the week will continue with a night game against Manhattan on Thursday, April 19, in Torrington, CT, slated for 6 p.m.
