Providence, RI -- University of Connecticut senior Chris DeBrisco (RHP, Stamford, CT) was honored along with Seton Hall’s Shawn Tarkington as the two received Co-BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors as announced by the league office on Monday.
DeBrisco helped UConn to a 5-0 week, which included a pair of non-conference wins (Rhode Island, 7-5, and Fairfield, 10-9) and a sweep of Pittsburgh (7-4, 3-1 on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday). In the Rhode Island game, DeBrisco came on in the ninth and earned his team leading second save of the season. He now has four in his career, which ranks as the third highest amount in school history along with Pete Smith (1996-99), Craig Gaudio (1988- 90) and Joe Frager (1981-84). In the second game of the doubleheader against Pittsburgh on Saturday, DeBrisco twirled seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits while tying his season high in strikeouts with five.
UConn ended up completing the sweep of the Panthers on Sunday, which marked the first time since 1992 that has happened. Connecticut’s 9-4 BIG EAST record has the Huskies alone in second place behind Notre Dame (8-2), giving UConn its best start in the league since 1992.
By virtue of taking all three from Pittsburgh, Connecticut has completely transformed a team that started off the season with a 1-10 record into a contender as the Huskies are now 15-14 overall and playing above .500 for the first time this year.
On Sunday, Tarkington gave up one hit over six innings to lead Seton Hall to a 15-4 win over Georgetown and a sweep of the three-game BIG EAST series. At 8-5 in the league, the Pirates are now locked in a four-way tie for third place with Rutgers, Virginia Tech and St. John's.
Connecticut will take a six-game win streak to South Orange, NJ, as its next game is a doubleheader against Seton Hall on April 12 that is set to begin at noon. The current win streak began on the first day of April and has since stretched to six straight. No team in the 1990’s ever opened the month in this fashion.
