Defense Dominates In UConn Blue-White Scrimmage

STORRS, CONN. - The University of Connecticut Football defensive unit held the offensive unit to 142 total yards, one field goal and recorded seven sacks in a dominating performance to conclude 2001 Spring Practice in the Annual Blue-White Scrimmage Saturday in Memorial Stadium.
Each unit recorded points for a variety of scoring plays during the course of action, such as sacks, first downs and fumble recoveries. The defensive unit totaled 68 points in the 60-minute scrimmage and held the offense to only 12 points on the afternoon.
Leading the Husky defense on the day was senior linebacker Justin Cook, who recorded a game-high eight tackles and two tackle for a loss. Junior linebacker Jamal Lundy totaled four tackles, two for a loss, and knocked junior quarterback Chris Willis out of the game with a sack and caused fumble early in the first quarter.
Other standouts for the defense included junior linebacker Razul Wallace, who had six tackles, one for a loss and one sack. Redshirt freshman cornerback Justin Perkins had five tackles and blocked a field goal. Redshirt freshman defensive end Tyler King had five tackles and one sack.
Offensively, redshirt freshman quarterback Keron Henry was 11-of-30 for 84 yards on the day and played every snap for both offensive units for most of the game following Willis' injury. Henry was sacked six times on the afternoon.
Sophomore tailback Evan Benson led the rushing attack with 37 yards on 16 carries. Sophomore Jason Dellaselva ran for 26 yards on 11 carries.
UConn opens the 2001 regular season on Saturday, September 1 with a 1:00 p.m. game at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
