STORRS, CT (September 29, 2001) -- Bouncing back from a two-game stumble, the University of Connecticut field hockey team used hot scoring from sophomore midfielder Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) to defeat the University of Massachusetts, 3-1, Saturday, at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
Christie netted the first two goals of her career in the first half of the game to pace the Huskies.
With 31:20 left to go in the first half, Christie used a penalty corner to grab her first goal. Freshman Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) was the shooter on the play, but the shot was saved by UMass goalie Ashley Egland. Christie, who had passed the ball in on the corner, stepped in and shot the ball into the net after it bounced off the goalkeeper’s glove.
The Huskies weren’t given much of an opportunity to celebrate, however, as the Minutewomen tied the score less than a minute later off a goal by Erika Whiston, assisted by Ashley Gilbert.
Both teams remained scoreless for the next 15 minutes until, off another penalty corner, the Huskies put themselves ahead for good. Again, Christie pushed the ball into the net, assisted by both sophomore Amy Marland (Mt. Warrigul, Australia) and Henderson.
In the second half, to seal the victory, the Huskies used a beautifully-executed play by Henderson and junior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) to put the game at its final score. From outside the circle, Henderson passed the ball to Stolle in front of the goal, who popped it up into the goal, inches above the goalie’s head.
For the game, UConn out-shot UMass, 18-10, and had three more penalty corners than the Minutewomen.
The Huskies look to come back from their first BIG EAST loss on Wednesday as they play host to Providence at 7 p.m. at home.
