Huskies Take Down Virginia Tech, 95-60

Hartford, CT (January 10)-- Ben Gordon ( Fr., Mt. Vernon, NY) came off the bench to score 18 points to lead five teammates in double figures as hot-shooting Connecticut routed BIG EAST foe Virginia Tech, 95-60, before a sellout crowd of 16,294 at the Hartford Civic Center Thursday night.
The victory improves the Huskies record to 9-3, a perfect 3-0 in league play. The Hokies tumble to 6-9 with the loss, 0-3 in BIG EAST play.
UConn scored the first four points of the game and were never headed, leading by as many as 14 in the first half before settling for a 39-30 lead at intermission. Gordon paced a balanced attack with nine points in the first half, while Johnnie Selvie (Sr., Flint, MI) added eight.
Connecticut blazed out of the gate after halftime, hitting 14 of their first 19 shots. The Huskies shot a sizzling 63% (17-of-27) for the second half, and finished the game at 56% (33-o- 59). The Huskies committed a season-low seven turnovers and connected on a season-high eight three-pointers.
Joining Gordon in double figures was the entire UConn starting five. Tony Robertson (Jr., E. Providence, RI) and Selvie each had 15 points, while Caron Butler (So., Racine, WI) and Emeka Okafor (Fr., Houston, TX) chipped in with 11 apiece. Taliek Brown (So., Queens, NY) added 10 points, while dishing out a game-high eight assists. Brown also turned over the ball just once and hit all five of his field goal attempts in 29 solid minutes.
Brian Chase and Carlos Dixon led Virginia Tech with 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Jan. 13, when they travel to Philadelphia, PA, to play league foe Villanova at the First Union Center. Game time is set for noon.
