Okafor Again Selected BIG EAST Rookie of the Week

Providence, RI (January 28, 2002) – For the third time this season, University of Connecticut freshman center Emeka Okafor (Houston, TX) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Okafor had a pair of double-doubles in a 2-0 week. He posted career highs in every department with 19 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocked shots in a 100-98 overtime win at then No. 10 Arizona. He also had 11 points and 10 boards in a 75-70 triumph over St. John’s. Okafor leads the BIG EAST with a 3.7 blocked shot average.
The award is the third such for Okafor who was selected as the Rookie of the Week for the first time on December 23rd, before sharing the honor with Chris Thomas of Notre Dame on January 14th.
