Huskies Head into Action for Homecoming Weekend

The University of Connecticut sports team fall into action during the annual upcoming homecoming weekend. Including three nationally ranked opponents, the Huskies and their rivals will hit to the grass, turf and ice as field hockey, volleyball, soccer and ice hockey defend their home territory. The fall sports are looking to better their post season chances, while the women’s hockey team begins it home 2002-03 schedule.
The UConn women's soccer team returns home this weekend to play host to the Pirates of Seton Hall. On the road last weekend, Connecticut split contests, shutting out Rutgers 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 11 and falling to Notre Dame, 3-1, on Sunday. The nationally ranked No. 10 Huskies now boast a record of 11-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division and have clinched a berth into the BIG EAST Championship Tournament. The Pirates, a member of the BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic division hold a 6-8-1 overall, 1-3-1 BIG EAST record. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20 and will be broadcasted on YES Network Television live from Morrone Stadium.
Connecticut women's ice hockey plays their home season opener this weekend with a pair of games against the Wisconsin Badgers, who are ranked No. 6 on the US College Hockey Online and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine polls. They played host to Northeastern last weekend, sweeping the Huskies with scores of 4-2 and 2-1. The Connecticut Huskies went 0-2 last weekend, falling to Mercyhurst 2-0 and 4-2 in Erie, PA. UConn's goaltender Shannon Murphy allowed six goals against the Lakers, but was awarded the second star in Saturday's 2-0 loss, stopping 32 Laker shots. On the weekend, Murphy made an impressive 63 saves for the Huskies. The Badgers and Huskies face off on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 & 20 at the UConn Ice Arena. Both game times are 2 p.m.
The University of Connecticut field hockey team will face BIG EAST foe Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. on the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex during Homecoming Weekend. The Huskies sit atop the BIG EAST standings with a 2-0 conference record and a win Saturday would help UConn's chances for a bid in the postseason tournament.
Connecticut’s offense is led by sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) who rank in the top five nationally in four categories through games of Oct. 15. Henderson is fourth in goals (15) and fifth in points (33), while Cochrane is third with 13 assists and fifth with 0.9 assists per game. Defensively, junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) has posted four shutouts in goal for UConn and boasts a 1.40 goals against average.
The Connecticut volleyball team will play host to the UConn Autumn Classic on Oct. 18-19, at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. Rhode Island, Fairfield and No. 7 nationally ranked Long Beach State will join the Huskies in the classic. Connecticut will open the classic verse Fairfield on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday against 2001 NCAA Tournament finalist Long Beach State at 2:30pm.
The only fall sport to travel out of town for homecoming weekend the No. 5 nationally ranked UConn men’s soccer. The Huskies will travel to South Bend, IN to take on BIG EAST rival No. 20 nationally Notre Dame on Sunday, October 20 at 2:00 pm.
