PISCATAWAY, NJ (February 18, 2002) – Four swimmers from the University of Connecticut swimming & diving team added themselves to the list of qualifiers for the BIG EAST Championships, after swimming at the Rutgers last chance meet on Saturday.
There are two different qualifying standards for the championships--the "A" and "B" standards. In order to swim in the meet, a swimmer must meet an "A" standard in at least one event, and then may swim the events they achieve a "B" standard in.
On the women’s side, junior Kelly Bergkessel (Fairport, NY) picked up an "A" qualifying mark in the 400 IM, and freshman Katy Cerrito (Scotia, NY), who had already "A" qualified in the 100 back, picked up a "B" qualifying mark in the 50 free.
On the men’s side, freshman Connor Murphy (Staten Island, NY) swam an "A" qualifying time in the 100 back, and sophomore Volkan Konuralp (Istanbul, Turkey), who swam this weekend in the Turkish National Championships, marked an "A" qualifying mark in the 200 fly with a short course meter time of 2:08.11.
The BIG EAST Championships will begin on Thursday, Feb. 21 and will run through Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in Uniondale, NY. Log onto the BIG EAST site at for full details on the championships.
