Boylan Earns Verizon Academic All-District I Honors

STORRS, CT (May 16) — University of Connecticut ice hockey team member Michael Boylan (Doylestown, PA) was named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District I At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Boylan, a second team selection in 2000-01, was named to this year’s first team, and will be placed on the ballot for national contention along with the nine other student-athletes selected to the first team.
Boylan, a defenseman, completed his four-year career at UConn having logged the most games played in hockey history (137 games). A strong presence from the blueline, Boylan scored a career 23 goals and 41 assists for 64 points, first among defensemen and fifth at UConn in Division I scoring history. This season, Boylan was named to the 2002 All-MAAC First Team after recording eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points, and was one of five selected as a UConn Club Outstanding Senior Athlete. Boylan is a Finance major ending his four years at Connecticut with a 3.895 grade point average.
Eight ice hockey players were among the 20 players named to the All-District I squad, including five first team choices. Boylan joins the likes of hockey opponents David Evans (Clarkson), Martin Kariya (Maine), Yann Danis (Brown) and Martin McRae (Cornell).
To qualify for the Verizon All-District program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in class, a starter or significant reserve on his team and have compiled a minimum 3.20 cumulative gpa. The District I team includes student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Resulting of the voting for the national At-Large squad will be announced June 11, 2002.
Connecticut completed its fourth season at the Division I level, earning a bid to the MAAC Championship for the fourth time in as many years. The Huskies completed the season with a record of 13-16-7 overall, 11-10-5 in the MAAC. UConn upset the No. 3 seed Holy Cross, 6-5, in the MAAC Quarterfinals, before dropping a 5-0 loss to the top-seed Mercyhurst in the semifinals.
