STORRS, CT (Aug. 31, 2002)-- The University of Connecticut field hockey team dropped its season opener in a 3-1 decision to Hofstra University in the opening game of the 2002 UConn Husky Classic at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on Saturday morning. The game was 13th year head coach Nancy Stevens’ 500th career game coached, making her only the fourth coach in intercollegiate field hockey history to have reached the coaching milestone.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard first when sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) dribbled through the Pride defense and knocked in a seven-yard unassisted shot at 13:23. However, the lead was short-lived as Hofstra answered 12 minutes later when Tara Byrne took a cross from Kerri Jantzen and beat UConn goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) from 12 yards out.
The Pride tacked on the game-winner just five minutes later when Tricia-Ann Greaves fed a cross to Leslie King who scored at 30:56 from four yards out, and Hofstra finished the scoring in the second period off a set corner play with Greaves sending it into the net at 40:31.
UConn outshot the Pride 13-12 overall and had nine corners on the day to Hofstra’s four. Butler had two saves in net for UConn, while Christine Hickey finished the game with nine saves for Hofstra.
In game two of the UConn Husky Classic, Providence defeated Vermont, 3-1, on goals by Kelly Romanowitz (16:44), Kelly Piwinski (47:19) and Jennifer Chin (69:30). Vermont’s lone goal was tallied by Kristin MacDonald (38:45). Providence outshot the Catamounts 17-5 to win its season opener.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1, when UConn faces Vermont in day two of the UConn Husky Classic at 11:30 a.m. at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. Providence will face Hofstra at 2 p.m. in the final game of the classic.
