UConn Swims to Strong Individual Finishes at the Husky Invitational

STORRS, CT (Oct. 18) - The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swim teams recorded numerous strong relay and individual finishes in a meet with Yale, Massachusetts, Southern Connecticut and Central Connecticut State held in Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on Saturday. Team scores were not computed for the meet, which was the first of the season for the Huskies.
Volkan Konuralp earned two first-place finishes for the men’s team, with a time of 1:46.45 in the 200-yard freestyle, and a time of 4:48.1 in the 500-yard freestyle. Tristan Jones led five Huskies who swept the top five spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Jones won the event with a time of 22.08, and Dustin Rogers took second in 22.31. Jones also took a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.34, and recorded his third win of the meet in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.55, and his fourth win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.40.
Rogers took a big win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.63, and his second win of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.02. John Bellinger placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.33, and Tim Wong won the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:57.42.
On the women’s side, Bridget Regan took first in the 400-year individual medley with a time of 4:39.73, and recorded two other top-10 finishes by taking fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle. Jacquelyn Craft won the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:05.07, and recording a win in the 100-yard breaststroke was Ryan Smith with a time of 58.40. Smith also took first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.49.
Liz Campbell took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.44, and Sarah Thomas won the 1000-yard freestyle event in 11:12.74. Jenny Chang recorded a win in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.39, and Diane Duncheskie won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.24. Cassie Novak finished well in many events, including a win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.42.
Next up for the Huskies is a meet at Fordham, where they will also face competition from St. John’s. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24 at 3:00 p.m.
