STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Shaun Feldeisen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I Football Team on Thursday in a vote of the region’s collegiate media relations personnel. By earning district honors, Feldeisen will be included on the national Academic All-America ballot. The results of the national voting will be announced on December 1.
"This means a lot to me," Feldeisen said. "It’s impressive company when you look not only at the stats that people on the team have, but also their GPAs. I try to be a good role model for the younger players on the team and show them that you have to get it done in the class room and not just on the football field. It’s very nice to be recognized for that and I appreciate it. I’d just like to thank the CPIA (Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes) staff, along with the coaches and my family, for helping make this possible."
Feldeisen is UConn’s leading receiver in 2003 with 55 receptions for 731 yards with seven touchdowns. As a tri-captain, he has helped guide the team to an 8-3 record thus far in just its second full-fledged season at the Division I-A level. Feldeisen also maintains a 3.63 GPA as a marketing major and has been a fixture on both the Dean’s List and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll throughout his time at UConn.
"I’m really happy to see Shaun get this honor," head coach Randy Edsall said. "He’s a model student-athlete and this is the best way to be recognized as such. This award is about more than just being a good football player or being a good student. There are a lot of people who are excellent in one way, but it’s a difficult challenge to put both together with the time constraints that playing a sport at this level involves. This honor goes to those people who constantly work hard to excel in everything that they do and Shaun is one of those people. I’m very happy for him."
To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his team with a 3.20 cumulative GPA. The District I team is compiled from all Division I-A and I-AA teams in New England and New York.
This is not the only award that UConn has earned for it’s work off of the field. In June, the program was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for having a 90-percent or better graduation rate. UConn was one of only seven Division I-A schools to be so honored, and the only public institution amongst the group.
