STORRS, CT (Dec. 11) - University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving head coach Bob Goldberg is pleased to announce that four swimmers have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for UConn next year. Three of the four compete for the powerful Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club near Washington, D.C. while the fourth is a promising New England native.
Emily Karel (Bethesda, MD / Walter Johnson HS), Jordan Zarin (Bethesda, MD / Charles E. Smith Day School) and Lindsay Rogers (Gaithersburg, MD / Stoneridge School of the Sacred Heart) will all head north from the Beltway to compete for the Huskies in the fall of 2004. Karel is a strong mid-distance freestyle performer who Goldberg sees as a potential replacement for senior Kate Jelus. Zarin’s forte is the butterfly, but can also help UConn in the backstroke and seems likely to become the heir apparent to senior Liz Campbell. Rogers will team with current UConn freshman Jacquelyn Craft to give the Huskies a strong punch in the breaststroke events.
Sarah Kearnes (Milford, MA / Milford HS) is a product of the Shawmut Aquatic Club and a potential replacement for senior Lindsay Hansen in the distance events.
"We will graduate four swimmers in May who have been critical to the team and these four signees can hopefully go a long ways towards replacing them," Goldberg says. "They were carefully selected and should make us a pretty good team next year and for years to come."
The Huskies posted a strong 4-2 record during the fall semester portion of their schedule and are currently on break for examinations. The team will reconvene for a training trip to the Bahamas in January where they will compete with Butler on Jan. 7. UConn returns to regular dual-meet action in Storrs on Jan. 24 when the Huskies play host to BIG EAST rival Syracuse in the Hartford Courant CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute.
