STORRS, CONN. - The University of Connecticut has announced a sellout of the "Preferred" section of Rentschler Field — its new football home in East Hartford. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon by UConn Director of Athletics Lew Perkins.
The Preferred section includes some 11,500 seats in the upper and lower bowls between approximately the 35-yard lines and the goal lines. Tickets are still available for purchase in the club, chairback (between the 35-yard lines), reserved and family sections.
The Huskies will open the brand-new, 40,000-seat Rentschler Field on August 30 vs. Big Ten Conference opponent Indiana.
"We are extremely excited about the response we have received regarding ticket sales," Perkins said. "It clearly indicates that there is great enthusiasm for UConn football as we head towards membership in the BIG EAST Conference."
UConn has sold approximately 20,000 season tickets for next year. In addition, UConn has reserved some 4,000 seats per game for students and another 3,500 for opponents, meaning that some 27,500 of Rentschler’s approximately 40,000 seats have been sold or allocated. Nearly 80-percent of the season-ticket sales are three-year commitments, taking those ticket-holders through the Huskies’ first season in the BIG EAST in 2005.
UConn has also responded to the demand for tickets in the Family section, doubling that number to nearly 1,000. The Family section is a no-alcohol seating area.
"The demand for the family section has been overwhelming," Perkins said. "That type of ticket plan has great appeal, and thus we decided to increase the number of tickets in that section."
In addition to the Indiana contest, other home games in 2003 are against Boston College (September 13), Lehigh (October 4), Akron (October 25), Western Michigan (November 1) and Rutgers (November 8).
