UConn Picks Up Conference Win Over Virginia Tech

STORRS, CT (April 19) – Behind a six-goal appearance from Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD), the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team broke a four-game losing slide with a 16-10 BIG EAST win over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies improve to an even 6-6 overall, and earn their first conference win to improve to 1-3. Virginia Tech drops to 3-12 overall and is winless in the BIG EAST at 0-5.
Virginia Tech’s Lindsay Welch put the Hokies on the board within the first three-minutes of play. UConn went on to take a two-goal lead (3-1) in a five-minute time span, all on free position shots by Heather Levins (East Northport, NY), Mullaney and Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY). Virginia Tech then slid ahead taking the 4-3 lead. Kate Threadgold scored two at 19:23 and 17:39, respectively and Lauren Kenny scored on a free position shot at the 16:36 mark. The Huskies took the commanding lead scoring six consecutive goals, from 15:57 to 2:20 left in the half. In UConn’s run, Mullaney notched three goals and Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, NY) and Levins each added one of their own. Virginia Tech’s Sam Sybert nailed a backhanded shot to bring the score to 9-5 in favor of the Huskies. Mullaney and Jacqui Hamilton (Hopkinton, NY) gave the Huskies the 11-5 lead with under 30-seconds left remaining in the half.
Heather Bliss (Tully, NY) came out quickly opening the half’s scoring just 30-seconds in for the Huskies, on UConn’s fifth free position goal of the day. Virginia Tech then scored two goals bringing the score to 12-7. Threadgold notched a free position goal at 25:01 and Sybert added another just over five-minutes later for the Hokies. Connecticut scored the next four goals with Mullaney notching her sixth of the game. Hamilton scored as she spun around with her back to net at the 14:10 mark, Lauri tallied at 11:32 and Melissa MacDougall (Baldwinsville, NY) tallied her first goal of the season with just over ten-minutes left in regulation on a free position shot. Virginia Tech answered back just over a minute later on an unassisted score from Welch, and then again by Katie Madden at the 4:52 mark.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) earned the win in net for UConn making 11 saves and allowing seven goals. Jennifer Wong (Greenwood Village, CO) saw time in the last 17-minutes of the game, allowing three goals and making three saves. Carrie Hill and Jamie McGraw combined for 9 saves for the Hokies. UConn was six-for-eight from free position shots.
Connecticut will play host to Fairfield University on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 pm at Morrone Stadium.
