STORRS, CONN. - Quarterback Matt Bonislawski was 16-of-28 in the air for 211 yards and rushed for a touchdown to lead the White team to a 12-6 victory over the Blue team in the 2003 University of Connecticut spring football game on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 2,319 at Memorial Stadium.
"The game wrapped up a very successful spring practice for us," says UConn head coach Randy Edsall. "We had beautiful weather today, which we did not have much of this fall. The best part of today, like all spring games, was that nobody got hurt. Now, its on to Rentschler Field."
The UConn football team will begin play at the brand-new 40,000-seat Rentschler Field in East Hartford on August 30 against Indiana.
Bonislawski scored on a 30-yard run with 12:44 left to play in the second quarter as the White team held a 6-0 halftime edge. Running back Chris Bellamy connected on a two-yard run with 10:26 left in the third quarter to make it 12-0 White.
The Blue team scored its only points of the game with 3:41 left in the third as quarterback Jermell Williams had an eight-yard rush for paydirt that capped an 11 play-56 yard drive.
Twice during the fourth quarter the White defense stopped the Blue from tying the game. The Blue marched to the White six yard line with less than nine minutes to go, but a Tyler King sack of Williams on fourth-and-goal from the White six prevented a score after an 11 play-47 yard drive.
Blue had one more shot to tie the game as it took over first-and-ten from its own 13 with 3:01 left to play, but the White defense only allowed one yard in that possession.
Williams was 17-of-31 for 165 yards as the White quarterback as 2002 UConn starter Dan Orlovsky missed all of spring practice with a broken bone in his foot.
Bellamy was the leading rusher in the game with 14 carries for 77 yards while Bonislawski had 11 carries for 59 yards. For the White team, Cornell Brockington led the way on the ground with 12 carries for 62 yards. Terry Caulley, UConn’s leading rusher from 2002, saw only limited first half playing time, carrying the ball four times for 21 yards.
O’Neil Wilson was the leading receiver for the White team with seven catches for 99 yards, including a 40-yarder, while Brandon Young led the Blue with seven catches for 63 yards.
