Huskies Come Back to Defeat Towson on Senior Day

STORRS, CT (May 3) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team notched four goals in each half to overcome Towson University, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies improve to 8-7, while Towson completes its season with a 7-9 overall record.
The first half saw four lead changes between Connecticut and Towson, as the team’s traded goals. Towson struck first on a shot from Stephanie Howell, just 1:03 into the game. Jacqui Hamilton (Hopkinton, MA) tied the score for the first time in the half at the 27:08 mark on an unassisted tally. UConn then had the chance to take the lead before the 20-minute mark on a missed free position shot from Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD). Towson then edged ahead at the 17:22 mark, when Kristyn Krastel sent in a centering pass to Kelly Fitzgerald, who shot the ball up and over UConn goalie April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY). The Huskies evened the score again 14-seconds later on a goal from Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, NY) with an assist from Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY). Towson took its last lead of the half on Howell’s second goal of the afternoon. The Huskies closed the half on two consecutive goals to take the 4-3 lead. Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ) collected her own dropped ball and launched a shot into the net to tie the score. Bonnie Wehinger (North Syracuse, NY) gave Connecticut the halftime lead with 2:11 left on the clock.
The Huskies opened the second half strong, scoring the first two goals for the 6-3 advantage. Mullaney scored on a free position shot 10-minutes into the stanza, and Feeley notched her second of the day less than a minute later. Becky Trumbo cut the Huskies lead to two on an unassisted shot at the 15:02 mark. Towson crept closer bringing the score within one with just over eight-minutes left in regulation on a score from Martha Dwyer. After a Tiger foul, Hamilton fired a free position shot from the right side for the Huskies seventh goal of the day. Towson continued to fight back, and cut the deficit to one with 2:35 left in regulation. Dwyer scored on a free position shot from the left center of the goal crease, for the slight 7-6 scoring disadvantage. VanDeusen capped off the Huskies scoring for the victory with 22- seconds remaining.
Pollock had eight saves for the Huskies, allowing six goals. Towson’s Jessica O’Connell had 15 saves, allowing eight goals on the day.
Connecticut will close out the regular season in a BIG EAST match-up against Boston College on Sunday, May 4 at 12 noon at Morrone Stadium.
