WINSTON-SALEM, NC (August 30) – The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team dropped its second game of the season at the hands of No. 19 North Carolina, 3-0, in second day action of the Wake Forest adidas Tournament in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday evening. The Huskies, ranked 10th nationally, drop to 0-2 on the young season, while North Carolina remains undefeated at 2-0.
Connecticut held the momentum for the latter part of the first half until North Carolina broke open the scoring with two quick goals. On only the Tar Heels’ second shot of the game, Marcus Storey broke through the UConn defense, past rookie defender Sean Cameron (North Brunswick, NJ) who had just came in off the bench. Storey went one-on-one with UConn goalie Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI), and slid the ball to the right of the net with 11:49 left in the half. Schuerman returned to play in his first game this season after spending the last two weeks with the US National Under-20 Team in Spain. North Carolina’s second goal came over four-minutes later (37:50) on a penalty kick. UConn defender Moshe Shalchon (Rishon Lezioh, Israel) committed a tripping foul in the Tar Heel offensive box, causing the penalty. Jamie Watson sealed the deal, notching his second goal of the weekend, including the overtime score against St. John’s on Friday night.
The second half didn’t pick up for Connecticut, as the Tar Heels out shot the Huskies, 5-4. Storey notched his second of the game with 5:14 left in regulation. He was assisted Watson and Ty Allison.
Schuerman made two saves in net for UConn in his season debut, while Justin Hughes stopped three Connecticut shots on goal.
Connecticut will return to action on Friday, September 5, when the Huskies host the annual UConn/adidas Classic in Storrs. Connecticut will face off against Boston University at 7:00 pm, following the Georgetown, Indiana match-up.
