STORRS, CONN. - University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced on Wednesday that the Huskies have signed 27 student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent to join the UConn program.
"I’m very satisfied with this signing class," Edsall says. "These are outstanding young men who will come in here, enhance our program, and allow us to continue to get better. There’s players at every position and we filled all of the things that we were looking for. I think we got a lot of individuals who have a great work ethic, good character and want to graduate. Those certain traits are always high on our list when we’re recruiting. I think this group of people will fit right in with the ones that we already have here on our campus. Plus, football is very important to them and that is something that you always look for."
The Huskies went 9-3 during the 2003 season, only the program’s second at a Division I-A level with a full compliment of scholarships. UConn finished the season ranked in the national top 10 in both passing offense and total offense and riding a five-game winning streak which is the fifth longest active streak in the country. UConn was one of only 12 teams to beat squads from three different BCS Conferences (ACC, Big Ten, BIG EAST) during the 2003 regular season and ended the campaign with an exclamation point, beating Wake Forest, 55-17, in Winston-Salem. UConn did not go unrecognized for its dramatic improvement as the Huskies saw the nation’s largest attendance increase, making a jump of 21,252 fans per game at Rentschler Field from the school’s 2002 total. The Huskies, who will begin play in the BIG EAST Conference this fall, have won 13 of their last 16 games. UConn’s nine victories in 2003 were the second most of any current or future BIG EAST team, trailing only Miami’s 11.
