STORRS, CT - The University of Connecticut football team held the second of its three full-session scrimmages of the spring on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Storrs. The final of the three scrimmages will be the annual Blue-White Spring Game, April 17 at noon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Admission and parking for the event are both free.
Matt Bonislawski threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth while hitting on nine of his 13 passes for 161 yards. He also carried the ball five times for 55 yards in an impressive outing. It was an average showing by starting quarterback Dan Orlovsky who hit on 13 of his 25 passes (the same numbers as the first scrimmage) for 127 yards with a touchdown and one interception. The main trend on offense was an improved rushing attack. In last Sunday’s scrimmage, UConn mustered just 148 rushing yards, 70 of them on a single touchdown gallop by Matt Lawrence. On Saturday, both Lawrence and Cornell Brockington broke the century mark as the Huskies combined for 425 rushing yards.
The defense actually scored first as Allan Barnes made the team’s only interception of the day, returning an Orlovsky pass 26 yards for a touchdown. After a series by the second team, Orlovsky would answer though as he led the team on a 10-play 66-yard touchdown drive that was keyed by 18 and 22 yard carries by Lawrence and capped with an 11-yard strike to Matt Cutaia. Lawrence scored the offense’s second touchdown on a one-yard plunge to cap another impressive drive. The Huskies had reach the goal-to-go situation after Dan Orlovsky found fullback Deon Anderson for a bruising 24-yard catch and run.
Bonislawski’s first score of the day was an impressive one. The sophomore narrowly got rid of the ball before being hit by Ray Blagman and completed the pass to Seth Fogarty who ran in for a 40-yard touchdown. The very next play from scrimmage saw Lawrence run almost untouched to pay dirt from 70 yards out. It was Bonislawski’s show from there. He scored on a one-yard plunge over the top of the pile and hit Dan Murray for touchdown passes of six and 58 yards. After starting one-of-four, Bonislawski hit on eight of his final nine passing attempts. Cornell Brockington also helped the offensive surge in the latter stages of the scrimmage. The sophomore’s final nine carries took him a combined 125 yards to cap a 168-yard effort for the day.
In addition to the Barnes interception, other defensive highlights included a pair of tackles for loss by both Shawn Mayne and Danny Lansanah and a nice forced fumble by Harold Stanback that was recovered by John Baranowsky.
