STORRS, CT - The University of Connecticut football team held the first of its three full-session scrimmages of the spring on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Storrs. The final of the three scrimmages will be the annual Blue-White Spring Game, April 17 at noon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Admission and parking for the event are both free.
"We did a lot of good things today and I thought that our intensity was good too," head coach Randy Edsall said afterwards. "I thought the defense was hard hitting and they ran well to the ball. We have some things to work on still. This was not a finished product at the first scrimmage. We need to get more consistent and I think that will come with more reps. The offense started off slow but soon they got the feel for it. I was happy that we were able to get a lot of our players plenty of work in, which will help us evaluate them."
Saturday’s controlled scrimmage saw first, second and third teamers go head-to-head with their equivalents on the opposite side of the ball and each set received a similar amount of plays. The order of the day early on was defense as for the first half-dozen or so possessions, none of the three offensive units could move the ball under constant pressure from the defensive front sevens. After misfiring on four of his first five passes, Dan Orlovsky found a rhythm when he marched the first team offense 70 yards in four plays for the game’s first score. On the scoring play, Orlovsky stumbled out from under center, but regained his balance and found Jason Williams open over the middle for the first score. Two big plays highlighted the next drive as Orlovsky hit Williams for a 20-yard catch and dazzling run, followed by a 37-yard scoring strike to Brian Sparks, who shined during the day’s scrimmage. Orlovsky would also throw a one-yard touchdown to tailback Matt Lawrence, to close a drive on which he went five-for-five for 37 yards. Orlovsky capped his afternoon in style as his final pass was a 25-yard touchdown strike to Keron Henry on a third-and-14 play. Orlovsky finished the afternoon 13-for-25 for 226 yards with four TDs and no interceptions. He completed 10 of his last 14 passes after starting just 3-for-11.
Matt Bonislawski’s best drive saw him hit Seth Fogarty for a crucial 11-yard catch on third down. After a 15-yard penalty for a late hit out of bounds, Cornell Brockington ran the remaining 10 yards to the end zone, untouched. Bonislawski also proved capable running the ball, gaining 35 yards on his three carries, including a 19-yard scamper down to the 15 yard line on a fourth-and-six situation. Shane Fogarty mounted a nice TD drive when he hit David Sanchez down the sideline with a 30-yard pass to the five yard line. Chris Bellamy scampered in to the end zone on the next play. Lawrence, meanwhile, provided the rushing highlight of the day. Lawrence appeared to be stopped for no gain at the line of scrimmage but kept his feet churning, snuck around the right tackle, and was gone 65 yards for a touchdown.
Amongst the defensive highlights were a pair of interceptions by freshman Marvin Taylor, the second one returned 70 yards for a touchdown. Freshman Ricky McCullom added an interception of his own. Maurice Lloyd forced a fumble with a strong hit, and the Husky defense recorded six sacks and a total of 16 TFLs.
Alfred Fincher led all tacklers with eight stops. Darius Leak and Taurien Sowell were both credited with six tackles. Ray Blagman made a pair of sacks, coming on consecutive plays. Tyler King, Gary Mack, Taurien Sowell and Harold Stanback also recorded sacks.
