EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The BIG EAST Conference announced on Wednesday during its annual Media Day at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford N.J. that the University of Connecticut’s football game against Army on Sept. 25 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. will be broadcast on ESPN Regional as the BIG EAST Game of the Week. The game will remain as a 12:00 p.m. kickoff. The game will air locally in Connecticut on WTXX.
In addition, the BIG EAST also announced on Wednesday that UConn’s game at home against Temple (Oct. 23) and its road contest at Syracuse (Oct. 30) are also under consideration for the league’s Game of the Week package. A decision on those games will be made 12 days prior to kickoff.
The BIG EAST Game of the Week package remains as the largest regional college football network in the nation, reaching more than 31 million homes. In addition, nearly all games broadcast by ERT are offered as a part of the ESPN GamePlan pay subscription service.
The Huskies will be no stranger to the television spotlight during their inaugural season in the BIG EAST Conference. UConn will make its BIG EAST and national-TV debut on Friday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face Boston College at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN2. UConn’s BIG EAST home opener, against Pittsburgh on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Rentschler Field will start at 7:00 p.m. and will also be broadcast by ESPN2. The Huskies will also welcome the national spotlight at Rentschler Field when ESPN carries UConn’s game against West Virginia at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. Another high-volume TV window will be filled with UConn football when the Huskies travel to Piscataway, N.J. to face Rutgers at 10:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day on ESPN2.
CONNECTICUT FOOTBALL TABBED FOR FIFTH IN PRESEASON POLL
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The University of Connecticut football team was picked to finish fifth out of seven teams this fall in the BIG EAST preseason media poll, which was also unveiled at the league’s annual Media Day on Wednesday at Giants Stadium. Each of the seven teams supplied four regular members of its local media corps to vote in the poll.
West Virginia was selected as the landslide favorite in the league, garnering 25 of a possible 28 first place votes. Boston College received the other three votes and are second overall. The race for the third through fifth spots could be interesting based upon the pollsters as Pittsburgh (109 points), Syracuse (108) and UConn (100) are all bunched tightly. Rutgers is sixth with 76 points while Temple was tabbed for seventh.
The Huskies will open play in the BIG EAST Conference on Sept. 17 when they travel to face Boston College at 8:00 p.m. live on ESPN2. UConn’s first home game as a league member will come on Sept. 30 when Pittsburgh pays a visit to Rentschler Field for a 7:00 p.m. game, also on ESPN2.
