STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Connecticut and head football coach Randy Edsall have agreed to terms for a new six-year contract that will run through June 30, 2010. The new contract is effective retroactively on July 1, 2004.
Edsall is currently in his sixth season as the head coach of the Huskies and came to the school for the 1999 season. He has led UConn to an overall record of 16-9 since the start of the 2002 season and he is guiding the Huskies through its first year as a BIG EAST Conference and Bowl Championship Series member in 2004.
Under Edsall’s guidance, the Huskies have defeated members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the BIG EAST, Big 10, Big 12 and Conference USA in their last 14 contests.
Edsall will receive a base salary of $200,000 for the 2004-05 academic year and that amount will increase by $25,000 annually through the contract.
In addition to his base salary, Edsall will receive $495,000 in the first year of the contract for institutional public relations commitments, which include institutional speaking engagements and media-related appearances. That amount will increase by $50,000 annually through the contract.
Edsall will also receive compensation for additional services if the UConn team advances to a bowl game. Edsall will receive one month’s base salary if the Huskies play in a non-Bowl Championship Series game and three month’s base salary for a BCS appearance.
"Today’s announcement is another milestone in the numerous positive developments that the UConn football program has experienced in the past several years," says UConn Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway. "Coach Edsall has done a tremendous job in providing leadership to the football program as we become the first university to transition from NCAA Division I-AA status to a member of a Bowl Championship Series conference.
"I am extremely proud of Randy and the accomplishments of our football program. I am grateful for the hard work and leadership he provides to our student-athletes and outstanding assistant coaches.
"Just as the University of Connecticut is committed to a successful athletic program, which includes Division I-A football, Randy is committed to the University of Connecticut. His positive influence is felt not only in our football program, but throughout the UConn community and the State of Connecticut."
"My family and I are excited about being part of the University of Connecticut," says Edsall. "The signing of this contract shows that the University has faith, trust and belief in me and it also is a sign of my commitment to the University. Most of all, I think its is proof that when people work together good things happen.
"I would like to thank President Philip Austin, Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway and the Board of Trustees for the University for their cooperation. I would also like to thank our student-athletes and assistant coaches because without their hard work this would not have been possible.
"I am really humbled by all of this and it is hard to fathom that somebody from Glen Rock, Pa., could ever be in this position."
