MOBILE, Ala. (January 29, 2005) – University of Connecticut linebacker Alfred Fincher made four tackles Saturday for the North team in the 2005 Senior Bowl. The North defeated the South in the game by a 23-13 score. UConn quarterback Dan Orlovsky did not play in the game after being treated for a viral infection. Both Fincher and Orlovsky participated in Senior Bowl practices the week before the game.
Fincher was the first Husky to ever participate in the prestigious event, which is the most heavily scouted of all of the post season collegiate all star games. The 56th annual Senior Bowl game was played at sold out Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
Orlovsky and Fincher both were on the roster for the North team, a squad under the direction of the Oakland Raiders' coaching staff and head coach Norv Turner. In a rematch of Super Bowl XXXVII, the South team was headed up by Jon Gruden and his assistants from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Illustrating the importance of the game, 28 of this year's NFL Pro Bowl selections played in the Senior Bowl.
Connecticut was the only BIG EAST school with multiple representatives on Senior Bowl rosters. Pittsburgh (OL Rob Petitti), Syracuse (OL Adam Terry) and West Virginia (RB Kay-Jay Harris) had one representative apiece, while future BIG EAST members Cincinnati (DE Trent Cole) and Louisville (LB Robert McCune) also had a single representative in Mobile.
In addition to Fincher and Orlovsky, center Billy Irwin represented UConn at The Villages Gridiron Classic outside of Orlando and cornerback Justin Perkins played in the Las Vegas All-American Classic.
