STORRS, Conn. (April 26) – The University of Connecticut softball team shutout Central Connecticut in both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field, winning by the scores of 3-0 and 1-0. With the pair of victories, the Huskies move their record to 18-24 overall, while the Blue Devils drop to 11-28 on the season.
In game one, UConn capitalized on two errors to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Senior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.) reached on an error by the pitcher to open the inning, advanced to third from first on the next play, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.).
The Huskies added their second run in the fourth as freshman Allie Gendron (Noblesville, Ind.) doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a single by senior Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) and scored on an errant throw.
Then in the sixth, freshman Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.) plated DiBiase with a single that landed just fair along the left field line. DiBiase went 2-for-3 in the contest with a run scored.
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) recorded the win (12-15) for Connecticut as she pitched seven shutout innings, scattering four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Sarah Mardis suffered the loss (5-8) for the Blue Devils, throwing six innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with no walks and one strikeout.
In the second contest, UConn tallied three of its six hits in the bottom of the sixth to plate the lone run of the ballgame. Gendron knocked a leadoff double, then, with one out, DiBiase singled to center. This set up Keeton with runners on first and second and she came through with a RBI single to right center that plated sophomore Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.), who pinch ran for Gendron.
Erin Monroe started for Central Connecticut and allowed three hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work. Danielle Cyr relieved her and took the loss (3-10) and she threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Gurney picked up her second victory (13-15) of the afternoon, pitching another complete-game shutout in which she allowed five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
UConn next travels to Amherst, Mass., on Wednesday, April 27, to face UMass in a single game beginning at 5:00 p.m.
