UConn Men's Soccer Falls To Bearcats, 2-0 Huskies drop first contest of the season to BIG EAST newcomer.
CINCINNATI, Ohio (September 16, 2005) - Despite playing a technically sound game on many levels, the fifth-ranked University of Connecticut men's soccer team fell 2-0 to BIG EAST newcomer Cincinnati Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The Huskies (4-1-0, 0-1-0) controlled the time of possession for much of the contest, but were simply unable to find the back of the net or execute the perfect shot. Meanwhile, luck was on the side of the Bearcats' (3-2-0, 2-0-0) Omar Cummings, who netted both goals for Cincinnati on long-distance bombs that dropped into the goal from above.
Playing on artificial turf for the first time the season, the Huskies were presented with several opportunities in the first period, but the ball just wouldn't bounce their way. Kevin Burns, playing just an hour and a half away from his hometown of Greenfield, Ind., sent a corner kick into play just over two minutes into the game that O'Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) headed high right to start off the offensive effort. Burns later put a free kick into the box following a Bearcat foul, but no Husky player was awaiting the serve so the play ended in the hands of Cincinnati's keeper, Mike Vessells, who finished the day with two saves. Cummings created enough action to make the second half more fruitful, at least for the 500-plus Bearcat fans in attendance. In the 54th minute of action, the Cincinnati player launched the ball from about 45 yards out sending a lofty shot that somehow fell into the net behind Husky keeper Adam Schuerman, who was farther out in the box waiting for the play to come downfield. Later, with just under two minutes to play, Cummings cemented the deal for the Bearcats with a bullet from 25 yards out to the right of the box that hooked around to fall into the far left corner of UConn's net. The Huskies will look to rebound from their first loss of the season against Louisville on Sunday in a 2:00 p.m. contest in Cardinal Park.
