HAMDEN, Conn. (March 18, 2006) - Junior Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) scored five goals for the second consecutive game as the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team rolled to an 11-6 win on Saturday afternoon over Quinnipiac. The Huskies improve to 2-3 with the win, their ninth all-time in nine meetings with the Bobcats, who dip to 1-3 in 2006.
After setting a career-high with five goals at Harvard on Wednesday, Burke matched that feat on Saturday. Burke's tallies giver her 109 career points and move her into the top five scorers in UConn history, passing Kariane Lauri (2001-04). Meanwhile, senior Kristen Haldeman (Malvern, Pa.) turned in a 20-save effort in the Husky net, tying April Pollock’s school record total set on May 13, 2000 against Johns Hopkins in the ECAC Tournament.
Burke netted each of the game’s first three goals, all of them unassisted, as the Huskies never let the homestanding Bobcats get into the contest. With an Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) goal at 11:22 off of a Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) feed, UConn led 4-0 nearly two-thirds of the way through the opening stanza. Quinnipiac scored twice before halftime, but Burke picked up her fourth goal of the half with just over two minutes to play, giving UConn a 5-2 cushion at the break. It is the 14th time in UConn history that a Husky has scored four goals in a half.
The second half opened much like the first as the Huskies scored three times in the opening nine minutes to go up by a commanding 8-2 margin. During this run, junior Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) scored on a free position, junior Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) converted on a pass from VanDeusen and Burke added her fifth and final goal of the afternoon. UConn and Quinnipiac traded goals over the final 20:20 of the game to account for the 11-6 final. Sophomore Robyn Pastuch (Merrick, N.Y.) tallied for the first two times this year, equaling her entire seasonal goal output as a freshman in 2005. Freshman Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the year with 1:13 to play, capping UConn’s scoring output.
UConn will return to action on Sunday, March 26 when the Huskies open BIG EAST play by facing nemesis Syracuse at the Carrier Dome as the Huskies shoot for their first win over the Orange in the ninth meeting between the schools.
