Joel Leads Women's Laxers Over Boston College, 13-10

NEWTON, Mass. (April 5, 2006) - Junior Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) scored two goals and tallied two assists to lead the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team over Boston College, 13-10, Wednesday night at Newton Campus Field. With the win, the Huskies break a three-game losing skid and improve their record to 3-6, while the Eagles fall to 6-5 on the year.
UConn never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead over the first eight minutes of action with goals from Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.), Kristin Link (Slinglerlands, N.Y.) and Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) before letting the Eagles climb back into the game at 3-2 with 13:21 to go in the half. The two teams traded tallies over the next nine minutes with Williams connecting on Joel’s second assist of the day and Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scoring her lone goal of the game.
The Eagles pulled within one at 5-4 with a goal from Margot Spatola, but Robyn Pastuch (Merrick, N.Y.) teamed up with Whitney Michele to (East Rochester, N.Y.) to score her third goal of the year and stretch the lead back to two with just under 30 seconds to go in the half. Boston College would be unable to close the gap for the remainder of the game, trailing by as much as six in the second period.
Coming out of the half with a score of 6-4, Michele scored 2:14 into play off a pass from VanDeusen to push the lead back to three goals. The Eagles countered with another score from Spatola, but the Huskies fired back five of the next six goals of the game to blow the lead wide open. Joel scored both of her goals during that stretch, scoring off a Burke assist at 24:25 and adding an unassisted tally with 15:42 to play.
With their largest lead of the day at 12-6, the Huskies gave up three straight goals to Boston College over a span of 2:34 before Link could thwart the comeback attempt with her second goal of the day at the 4:48 mark.
Spatola, the only player to have a multi-goal game for the Eagles, finished the day with a game-high five goals and a team-leading four ground balls.
The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Rutgers at 1:00 in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
