STORRS, Conn. (October 30, 2007) - Heading into week nine, the University of Connecticut men's soccer team has taken over the top spot in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, released Tuesday. Wake Forest, who suffered its first loss of the year to Boston College Saturday, fell to No. 2.
This is the third week in the 2007 season that the Huskies (14-2-1, 7-2-1) have held the No. 1 distinction and the eighth straight week that they have been among the top five.
UConn is led up front by five-time BIG EAST Player of the Week O'Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario) who has scored 17 goals and tallied six assists this season. He was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week Tuesday after scoring six points (2g, 2a) last week to move into ninth all-time in single-season points.
In the back, Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) has helped hold opponents to a 0.63 goals against average while securing nine shutouts. He is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and a candidate for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy for the third straight year.
Under head coach Ray Reid, the Huskies are 8-4-2 as the No. 1 team.
UConn will look to defend its ranking Saturday against Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Huskies are 2-2-1 on the road this season.
