Men's Track And Field Takes Third At Minuteman Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. (April 28, 2007) — The University of Connecticut men's track and field team won three individual events and placed in the top-10 of seven others en route to a third place finish Saturday afternoon at the Minuteman Invitational.
Meet host Massachusetts won the event with 147 total points, while New Hampshire finished in second place with 126 points. After UConn, Harvard and Vermont rounded out the top-five finishers with 56 and 50 points respectively.
In the track events, freshman Rene Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.32. Sophomore Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned the individual title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53.
In field events, freshman Bryan Curley (Branford, Conn.) was second in the pole vault with a height of 4.30 meters. Fellow freshman Jamaal Smith (Albany, N.Y.) took home the individual crown in the long jump with a distance of 6.72. Also in the event, Coleman was fourth with a distance of 6.64 meters, while also finishing second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.33 meters.
Sophomore Joseph Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 12.88 meters. Fellow sophomore Andrew Bennett (Westbury, N.J.) finished third in the discus throw with a distance of 45.12 meters.
UConn placed two in the top-10 of the hammer throw led by freshman Joe Tiernan's (North Kingstown, R.I.) first place finish with a distance of 53.86 meters. Junior David Roy (Woonsocket, R.I.) took third with his distance of 51.71 meters.
UConn returns to action May 4-6 when the Huskies host the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships for the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
