STORRS, Conn. (August 11, 2007) -- The University of Connecticut football team held its first two-a-day practice of the 2007 fall campaign on Saturday under cloudless skies in Storrs. The morning session was held on the team's outdoor practice fields while the afternoon practice was a special open session at Memorial Stadium which attracted a couple of hundred fans. Both ends of the two-a-day session were held in full pads.
The morning practice started with punt return work and a half an hour of individual positional drills. After some installation and full-team work on first-and-ten and second-and-long situations, UConn broke to practice kickoff coverage. UConn reconvened as a team to practice some live drives before another installation session, this one focusing on red zone offense and two point plays. The Huskies wrapped the two-hour morning session with a series of red zone and tight red zone drills.
In the afternoon session, UConn opened with kickoff coverage work before calisthenics and field goal unit work. After breaking off into individual position groups for 25 minutes of work, UConn installed some of its zone coverages. After working on second-and0-logn and third-and-long situations as a full team, more installation occurred. UConn worked on third-and-long and third-and-medium plays for the next 20 minutes before wrapping up practice with the two minute drill.
“It thought it was a good afternoon,” UConn head coach Randy Edsall said. “The afternoon was more consistent than what we had in the morning. I thought they came through the first double session in pretty good shape. We got a lot of good third down and two minute work in and blitzing too. This morning with the red zone and tight red zone was good too.
"We're making progress. There's things that I see improving each time out here. It's just a matter of putting block upon block as we go and getting better each and every day. If we do that, we'll be okay."
The Hard Hat of the Day awards for Friday's practice were presented to Steve Brouse (Selinsgrove, Pa.) and Cody Brown (Coral Springs, Fla.) for their fine work on offense and defense, respectively.
The Huskies return to the practice field on Sunday afternoon for the team's first scrimmage of the fall.
