STORRS, Conn. (August 12, 2007) -- The University of Connecticut football team conducted its first scrimmage of the fall on Sunday afternoon on its outdoor practice fields in Storrs.
The controlled scrimmage was a lengthy one as the team battled for two and a half hours with both the offensive and defensive units playing to a relative stand-still. The first teams, second teams and third teams went head-to-head in a series of drives with predetermined starting points and neither side seemed to have an upper hand on the day. At times the offense was able to drive the ball, while the defense stepped up on others to force turnovers and three-and-outs.
“It was good to get out here into some heat and get some work in,” UConn head coach Randy Edsall said. “We've got a lot of work to do yet. I thought we did some good things on both sides of the ball and I thought that every group had some good moments today. You can see that a lot of guys are hungry as they battle for positions. They're working hard.
"Progress has clearly been made this week. We have a lot of things to clean up still this next week. We did the bulk of our installation this week. We will still have some more next week but now we can go back this upcoming week and refine the things that we've been doing. I hope to see more progress now that just about everything's installed. This is a big week upcoming for us with three two-a-days."
The Hard Hat of the Day awards for Saturday's practices were presented to Terence Jeffers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Jasper Howard (Miami, Fla.). Howard is the first true freshman to receive one of the newly-minted awards.
The Huskies have Monday off to recover from the scrimmage while the team holds its annual media day. UConn returns to the field on Tuesday for a two-a-day practice session.
