STORRS, Conn. (September 2, 2007) - Three different players tallied goals for the University of Connecticut men's soccer teams as it defeated Stony Brook, 3-0, Sunday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in front of 2,248 fans. With the win, the Huskies are off to a 2-0-0 start to the season, while the Seawolves dip to 1-1-0 on the year.
O'Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario) scored his team-leading third goal of the season, while Ryan Cordeiro (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Karl Schilling (Canton, Conn.) each put up their first tally of the year. In addition, Mike Pezza (Jackson, N.J.) had his second multi-assist game of the year, earning two helps for the Huskies.
For the second-straight game, UConn's defense was superb, limiting Stony Brook to just one shot of the night, coming late in the second half.
UConn's first two goals came within the opening 10 minutes of play, the first coming off a penalty kick opportunity late in the seventh minute. Pezza played the ball up to White in the middle of the penalty area, where he was tripped up by a Stony Brook defender. The Huskies were awarded a penalty kick and Schilling buried the ball in the corner, marking his third career goal off a PK and putting UConn on top 1-0.
White stretched the lead to two exactly two minutes later when Pezza sent the ball to Akeem Priestley (Kingston, Jamaica) along the right sideline. Priestley then fired a textbook cross into the box where White was waiting five yards out from the goal mouth. White headed the pass into the right corner and UConn was quickly on top 2-0 at the 8:46 mark.
The Huskies continued to push forward, tallying a 5-0 shot advantage in the first period. Pezza and Priestley both had close calls in the 20th minute, tallying back-to-back shots, but neither one could find the back of the net. The draught was short-lived, however, as Cordeiro was able to put the Huskies up 3-0 early in the 31st minute of play.
Pezza, earning his second assist of the night and fifth on the season, sent a forward pass to Schilling, who in turn fired it over to Cordeiro in the goal box. Cordeiro poked it in and the Huskies earned their second-straight three-goal half.
The Huskies posted just three shots in the second stanza, opting for a more settled style of play to close out the game. They ended the night with a 8-1 shot advantage and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
UConn returns to action Friday night in the UConn/adidas Classic in Morrone Stadium. South Florida and Florida International will face off first at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Huskies and South Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
