STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 14, 2008) – The University of Connecticut held its weekly football media luncheon on Tuesday for Saturday's game against Rutgers. Here are selected quotes from the event.
Head Coach Randy Edsall
After the number of big plays vs. North Carolina, how do you plan on preventing similar occurrences in the coming weeks?
People are going to make big plays against you. They’re on scholarship and they have good players too. What we want to do is minimize those big plays by everybody taking care of their responsibility. If you can make people nickel and dime you, there’s a better chance of the offense screwing up before you screw up and you can get them in those third-and-long situations.
What do you expect from Zach Frazer vs. Rutgers?
I would expect him to be better this game because he has a game and a half under his belt and has that experience. I thought he did some really good things vs. North Carolina, but then there’s those five or six plays he wishes he could have back. He’s very conscientious and he’ll learn from those things.
On Sophomore CB Jasper Howard.
I think some people have a tendency to throw away from where Darius (Butler) is, which puts a little more pressure on Jas (Howard). I think he’s responded well to it and he understands that when you have a guy like Darius, people might tend to stay away from him and go after the other guy because he’s the new kid on the block. I think he’s responded well, but he’s got to get better with his fundamentals and technique.
How helpful was the bye week?
They were going since July 31st. With the Thursday night game and the two Friday games and some short weeks in there, it was time for a break. It was time for a break for health reasons, for mental reasons, and now we’ve got to go back out and be hungry, be aggressive, play with great intensity, and practice the right way. We need to recognize the importance of these last six games and take them one game at a time.
Are you worried about Andre Dixon?
Andre’s fine, he’s our number two this week. We hope to get him in there a little bit more. But he’s good, his psyche is good and he knows when his number is called he’s going to go out and play the way he needs to play. There are certain situations in the game plan where he will be called upon to go out and do the job expected of him. I’m not worried about Andre whatsoever.
