STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 29, 2008) – The University of Connecticut held its weekly football media luncheon on Tuesday for Saturday's game against West Virginia. Here are selected quotes from the event.
Head Coach Randy Edsall
On 5-2 (3-0) West Virginia.
They put a lot of pressure on you defensively with what they do offensively. Their defense is getting better with the 3-5-3 look. They run well to the ball and are very athletic. It’s a team that has really hit its stride a little bit after the Auburn game last week. It’s a tremendous opportunity but also a tremendous challenge that will be waiting for us at noon on Saturday.
How is Zach Frazer doing?
He’s doing well. He practiced Sunday and he’s going to practice all week. He came in yesterday and we talked and he say’s he feels good. I go by that and what we see on the practice field. I’ll decide (on who’s playing QB Saturday) later on.
Are there any players you expect more out of?
I expect more out of everyone. I expect more out of Donald Brown. I think it’s the level of expectation I have, not only for myself, but for all these guys to try to hit, that might make it look like I’m not having fun. I’m trying to push the envelope to make sure a guy reaches a certain standard that I think they can get to in all faces of their life.
On West Virginia QB Pat White.
You’ve got to go and line up and take a shot with the best angle you can because if you go in and start to break down to make a tackle on him he’s probably going to make a little juke and you’re going to be left gasping for air. You could be perfect and he could still make a big play off of you.
Have you considered giving Andre Dixon some kick returns?
We’ve got guys that are doing a pretty good job there now. It’s hard to take Jas (Howard) out, he’s leading the BIG EAST in punt returns. On kickoff return Darius (Butler) and Robbie (Frey) are doing a pretty good job. We’re comfortable with those guys but we’re trying to get him involved in special teams in another way.
On Freshmen K Dave Teggart.
When we told him he was going to go in there he took it in stride. The thing I like about David is that he’s one of those kickers that was an athlete. He was a baseball player, he played linebacker—he’s not just a kicker. He has competed in the arena other than kicking so he has a little bit of a different mentality.
Freshmen QB Cody Endres
How do you think you performed in your first game?
We played a great game and got the win, but after the game Coach Ambrose asked me to grade myself and I gave myself a “C” to tell you the truth. There were some things I could’ve done but I think I did an OK job managing the game.
What kind of relationship do you have with Tyler Lorenzen?
Tyler’s a great guy. Every time I come off the field I’ll go to him or he’ll come to me and I’ll ask what he saw out there. He just gives me information from a point of view of someone who has more experience than me.
