Becomes first Husky to earn First Team All-America honors in FBS era
STORRS, Conn. (December 17, 2008) – University of Connecticut junior running back Donald Brown (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) was named First Team All-America by the Sporting News on Wednesday. It is the third All-America honors for Brown as he was named Second Team All-America by the Associated Press and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. He was also named the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-BIG EAST last week.
Brown is the first UConn football player to be named to an All-America team since the program was elevated to the Football Bowl Subdivision (former Division I-A) in 2002. He becomes the tenth player overall in school history to earn First Team All-America honors with the last one being offensive lineman Tavaar Closs in 1997.
He was joined on the first team at running back by Shonn Green of Iowa while Javon Ringer of Michigan State and Kendall Hunter of Oklahoma State were on the second team.
Brown rushed for 1,822 yards and 17 touchdowns during the regular season and has been atop the national leader board in rushing yards (151.8 yards per game) for the majority of the year. He ran for at least 100 yards in 10 games.
Brown and his UConn teammates take on Buffalo in the International Bowl on Saturday, January 3, 2009, in Toronto at 12:00 p.m.
